In Year 5, we don't just sit at desks- we travel through time and across continents! Here is what we will be exploring this year:
History: Empires & Monarchs
The Ancient Greeks: We’ll explore the birth of democracy, the original Olympic games, and the epic myths of gods and monsters.
The Tudors: From the six wives of Henry VIII to the Golden Age of Elizabeth I, we dive into the portraits, politics, and power struggles of this famous dynasty.
Geography: Wonders of the World
Polar Regions: A journey to the Arctic and Antarctica. We examine how animals survive in extreme sub-zero temperatures and the impact of climate change on our ice caps.
The Rainforest: We’ll explore the layers of the rainforest and understanding the delicate balance of its ecosystem and the effects of deforestation.
Coasts: From erosion to tourism, we study how the land meets the sea and the unique features of the British coastline.
Homework, Reading & Spellings
- Children are asked to complete 2 HomeWorks per half term. Children can choose from a selection of topic-based HomeWork ideas found within their learning logs. Dates for completion can also be found inside learning logs.
- Children are expected to read each day. Reading should be recorded in their learning logs. This will be checked each week by the class teacher.
- Children will be given spellings each week. These can be practiced on Spelling frame or using the sheets provided. Children will be tested weekly.
Swimming
During the Spring term, Year 5 will begin their weekly swimming lesson. This is a vital part of the PE curriculum, focusing on water safety, confidence, and stroke technique.
Residential
In Year 5, we are able to offer the fantastic opportunity for children to attend a one-night residential trip to the historic city of York! This trip is a highlight of the Year 5 calendar, offering a fantastic opportunity for the children to build independence and take part in workshops linked their history and geography topics.
