Science Vision and Intent

At Springvale Primary, we believe that science is a vital part of understanding the world and shaping the future. Our vision is to inspire a sense of curiosity, wonder and responsibility in all pupils, enabling them to explore, question and make sense of the world around them. We aim to develop confident, inquisitive learners who think scientifically, use evidence to justify ideas and recognise the importance of science in their everyday lives and future opportunities.

Our intent is to deliver a high-quality, ambitious science curriculum that is coherently planned and carefully sequenced from Nursery to Year 6. Beginning in the Early Years, children explore the natural world through rich, hands-on experiences such as observing animals, seasonal changes and materials. This early exploration develops curiosity, language and observation skills, providing strong foundations for future learning. These areas are revisited and developed over time, enabling pupils to deepen their understanding, make connections and retain knowledge. The curriculum is designed to move from simple, concrete experiences to more complex and abstract concepts, ensuring progression for all learners.

Alongside substantive knowledge, we place a strong emphasis on working scientifically. Pupils develop disciplinary knowledge through a range of enquiry approaches, including observing over time, pattern seeking, identifying and classifying, comparative testing and research. They are taught to ask questions, make predictions, use scientific equipment accurately and interpret results, fostering independence, resilience and critical thinking. A key feature of our science curriculum is its focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility. Through carefully planned units such as plastic pollution, food waste, deforestation, global warming and renewable energy, pupils develop an understanding of global challenges and their role as informed, responsible citizens who can contribute to a more sustainable future.

We are committed to ensuring that all pupils, regardless of background or starting point, have access to a rich and inclusive science education. Through the explicit teaching of scientific vocabulary, meaningful practical experiences and opportunities to apply learning in real-world contexts, pupils develop confidence and competence in science.

Science at our school empowers children to explore, question and care for their world - both now and in the future.
